ANTH 103 Reading Response Essay #1

Note: In order to answer this prompt you will need to have read the assigned
chapters in Mead’s book as well as the readings that are assigned for April 15.
Topic:
Margaret Mead and Derek Freeman present very different perspectives on
sexual behavior and morality in Samoan society (e.g., regarding virginity, sexual
activity before or outside of marriage, or sexual violence). Focusing briefly on one
or more of these topics, how do their views differ? Whose argument did you find
more persuasive, and why? How, if at all, did the other readings assigned about
this controversy influence your views?
You don’t need a formal bibliography, but please make it clear which readings
you are referring to and cite specific pages where relevant (even if you are not
quoting directly from the source). If page numbers are not available you can just
cite the source (e.g., Freeman 1983, ch. 16).
Length: about 250-400 words (please do not exceed two pages double spaced).

Anthropology 114P: Questions for Second Exam/ Essay

Responses should be typed (double spaced) and 3-4 pages in length. Use text references in the
the style introduced in the online quiz, and include a bibliography also according to those
standards.
Once you begin your paper, you should not discuss the questions or your responses with other
students. You should also not show your paper to other students. The papers are all “open
book”—you may consult lecture notes and class readings. You are strongly discouraged from
referencing materials other than the class readings in your papers.
Answer both questions. Please number each of your responses (1 and 2); you do not need to
repeat the question in your response.
1. The discussion by Cyphers and Di Castro (2009) of the symbolism and chronology of the
“cosmic monster” (referred to as the “Olmec dragon” in lecture—same thing) is important.
Explain the debate and consider what the evidence from San Lorenzo now shows about the
origin of Olmec symbolism. (Suggested length 1 to 11⁄2 pages.)
2. Describe the model of the founding of Monte Alban proposed by Marcus and Flannery (1996)
and largely supported in the textbook chapter by Arthur Joyce (2004). Be sure to explain: (1) the
logic of the model (how and why did the city emerge?) and (2) how important pieces of evidence
are used to justify it (for instance, locations of sites in relation to each other or to agricultural
land, histories of occupations of sites, archaeological evidence for conflict, stone carvings, and/or
evidence for institutions expected of chiefdoms or states). (Suggested length 2 pages.)

Anthropology 114P: Questions for First Exam/ Research Paper

Responses should be typed (double spaced) and 3-4 pages in length. Use text references in the
the style introduced in the online quiz, and include a bibliography also according to those
standards.
Once you begin your paper, you should not discuss the questions or your responses with other
students. You should also not show your paper to other students. The papers are all “open
book”—you may consult lecture notes and class readings. You are strongly discouraged from
referencing materials other than the class readings in your papers.
Answer all three questions. Please number each of your responses (1, 2, and 3); you do not need
to repeat the question in your response.
1. Put into your own words how (in John Clark’s view) hereditary inequality arose during the
Early Formative in Mesoamerica. When does he place the origins in his two cases (Oaxaca and
Mazatan)? Based on what evidence? (Suggested length 1 page.)
2. How is Mesoamerica defined as a culture area? Explain Kirchhoff’s approach and Rosemary
Joyce’s objections to it. What alternative understanding does Joyce propose? (Suggested length 1
page.)
3. Briefly explain the models for the origins of agriculture in Mesoamerica proposed by Flannery
and Bellwood. In the case of Flannery’s model, be sure to consider the importance of change in
procurement systems. For Bellwood, be sure to explain what the distribution of languages tells
us. Finally, consider how these approaches differ: do you see them as compatible or opposed?
Explain. (Suggested length 1-2 pages.)

Anthropology 114P: Question for Third Midterm Exam/ Research Paper

Responses should be typed (double spaced) and 3-4 pages in length. Use text references in the
the style introduced in the online quiz, and include a bibliography also according to those
standards.
Once you begin your paper, you should not discuss the questions or your responses with other
students. You should also not show your paper to other students. The papers are all “open

referencing materials other than the class readings in your papers.
Answer both questions. Please number each of your responses (1 and 2); you do not need to
repeat the question in your response.
1. Saburo Sugiyama (2000) envisions a coherent system of ritual symbolism at the Feathered
Serpent Pyramid. Explain the themes he identifies, noting at least two pieces of supporting
archaeological evidence in each case. (Suggested length 1-1.5 pages)
2. Explain Pasztory’s argument that Teotihuacan was founded on a utopian vision. Drawing as
appropriate on lectures and the various Teotihuacan readings, consider at least three specific
sources of evidence that might be used to support Pasztory’s interpretation. Be sure to also
explain what this evidence would tell us about the kind of society the teotihuacanos were trying
to create. Were they successful? Justify your assessment. (Suggested length 2 pages.)
