Research Essay

In 2-3 double-spaced pages, please respond to the following questions using 1-inch margins and a 12-point font.
Please include a bibliography (which does not count toward your page limit).

What you’ll do differently in this assignment is start the essay with an introductory paragraph that summarizes the paper.  For example, in the introduction, the first sentence could introduce the topic, then briefly summarize the news topic in the second sentence.  The third and fourth sentences will summarize what the research articles have said, and finally in the fifth/sixth sentences, you state what you think is good/bad about the research methods.  This last sentence is your thesis, it is supposed to be an argument or claim you are making, and the position that you will defend in the paper.

With an introduction paragraph that is set-up this way, the rest of your paper is basically organized.  You can then devote one or two paragraphs to each of these sentences and expand on them in greater detail.

For your sources:

  • Use at least one news source and minimum three to four research sources.  Of your research sources, please make sure only one of them is a review piece, such as from Annual Review of Sociology, the remainder must be empirical articles based on data/experiments.
  • Make sure to include a variety of methods in the research sources.  That means incorporate research articles that use different methods such as quantiative and qualitative approaches.
  • In your essay, please analyze the  strengths and weaknesses of each approach, describing the method of data collection and analysis and including your own critical opinion of the methods.
  • Incorporate in your analysis the concepts from chapters three, four and five: research ethics, conceptualization and measurement, plus generalizability and sampling.
  • Please assess the research articles based on these factors and then reflect on these factors critically: do you think they are good enough criteria to evaluate research methods?  What do you think is missing, what could be done differently to improve them beyond these factors

SOCO 101: Principles of Sociology Research Paper
“Choose Your Own Adventure” Term Paper

Spring
Your term paper is worth 25% of your overall grade.
This is worth 10% of your total score for the term paper. You will submit a
few sentences indicating your choice of option (from those provided below), as well as a
link to at least one of your sources. The source will be the following, depending on the
option you select:
a. Option #1: an image/link and brief description of one of the magazine ads or
commercials that you will use
b. Option #2: a brief description of what your norm breaching experiment will be
(what, where, when, etc.)
c. Option #3: a link and brief description of one of the newspaper articles that you
will be analyzing
d. Option #4: will vary according to the prompt that we create together (proposed
prompt due by Tuesday, April 13)
Option #1: Gender Socialization through Mass Media
Chapters: Ch. 4 “Socialization” and Ch. 11 “Gender and Sexuality”
Select either 4 magazine advertisements or 4 television commercials (2 apparently aimed at
women and 2 apparently aimed at men). The ads should be from within the past 5 years.
Analyze what these ads or commercials are saying about gender socialization, relationships
among genders, and gender expectations. Make sure to explain sociological accounts of how
the media affects socialization, along with why you chose the ads that you did and where they
are from (and what this means). Think also about socialization throughout the life course, and
how these ads fit in.
Option #2: Social Norms & Deviance Research
Chapters: Ch. 2 “Sociological Research,” Ch. 3 “Culture,” and Ch. 7 “Deviance, Crime, and Social
Control”
This option builds on our discussion of methodology – design your own mini study in which you
break a social norm (nothing illegal or dangerous PLEASE – if you have to ask, you probably
shouldn’t do it, but if you aren’t sure please ask me J). There are numerous examples of this
(i.e. talking to yourself loudly in public or telling someone about everything you did that day
when they ask how you are, but this can also work online! Feel free to use Zoom, a phone, etc.
for your norm breaking). Include a discussion of how norms operate in society and how
ethnocentrism, cultural relativism, etc. relate. Describe what norm you broke and your
experiment overall (where, when, how, who was present) and how the other people who were
present responded. How does this affect your own behavior, both for the experiment and in
general?

Option #3: Conflict-Theory & Racism Today
Chapters: Ch.1 “Introduction to Sociology” and Ch. 10 “Race and Ethnicity”
Some people argue that racism has greatly declined throughout the decades since the Civil
Rights Era, resulting in a “post-racial” society. However, others argue that racism is still very
prevalent even today. Using at least 3 news articles (from reputable news sources) or
alternative media (please discuss this with me) and an explanation of the conflict approach,
explain how racism and discrimination still exist today, and how it has shifted since times when
overt racism was socially accepted. The articles should have been published within the past
year.
Option #4
You can propose your own topic if you wish, but you must send me a proposed prompt
(through Canvas Conversations) and get my approval. Your proposal should follow the format of the created prompts above, and should require use of at
least 2 chapters from our course textbook (1 chapter from Chapters 1-5 and 1 from Chapters 7-
17).
